May 1st Salzburg

Today we spent the whole day in Salzburg.  We got up and went to mass in our 3rd catholic church in the 3rd different language.  Today there was a orchestra and classically trained choir.  They sang about 9 classical religious songs.  These people were really purdy good.  As far as I could tell they were hitting all the notes and sounding real good.  It was a concert during church.  We went to church in the Salzburg Cathedral, where Mozart got some on the job training playing the organ on Sunday.  I don't know much about the state of the church in Europe, but they have cornered the market on beautiful churches.  Every church you go into is beautiful.  Some are big and some are small but all of them are beautiful.  We climbed up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress.  It is one of the only medieval fortresses that was never conquered.  They put it up on that hill and if you just had to walk up the hill you wouldn't be much good in a fight.  Some of the pictures of Salzburg today were taken up on the fortress.  We went to Mirabell Gardens and saw the  beautiful plantings.  See the pictures.  They filmed some of The Sound of Music in the gardens.
We finished up the day in a Beer Garden eating Bratwurst and Kraut and drinking some of the local beer.  They had a band that played Austrian folk music.  There were some people there who were feeling no pain, but they were having a raucous good time.  Classical music is hugh in Salzburg and you can attend a free concert virtually every day.  We went to one, for a while, in one of those beautiful churches.

We are off to Munich tomorrow.  Don't know about the internet there, but keep checking back.  More beer gardens and the BMW museum.

The hillbillies on holiday say auf wiedersehen from Salzburg.

Here of some of the pictures of Salzburg.
