May 7th Bavaria

Thursday and Friday we spent in Bavaria.  We stayed in the 200 year old farm house of Conny Schon.  There place was built by her family in 1812.  The family has lived there since and they run a small dairy farm.

Thursday we visited the castles of King Ludwig the King of Bavaria.  This guy built several castle but we just visited Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein.  The first one was built in the early 19th century and the latter was built in the last of the 19th century.  Neuschwanstein is the castle Walt Disney used as his model for the castle in Disney's Magic Kingdom.  They wouldn't let us take pictures inside but we have some exterior shots in the pictures.  We sat by the lake on the property after the tours and watched about 40 guys paragliding off the mountains in the area.  These guys ride the ski lifts and gondolas to the top of the mountain and just run off the mountain.  As long as they have updrafts, I guess they can stay up in the air for ever.  Nonette took a lift up the mountain and rode the Luge down.  See the action in the pics.  We later rented bicycles and rode in the valley under the castles.  See the action pics.

Friday we visited the Bavarian towns of Oberammergau and Mittenwald.  The towns were neat little villages with beautiful buildings.   Overammergau is famous for it's wood carvers and Passion Play they put on every 10 years.  We went to Mittenwald because Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel went there.  The country we drove through was beautiful.  See the action pics.

We are now in the Black Forest of Germany in western Germany.  We are going to drive through the area tomorrow and buy a Coo-Coo Clock.  All the coo-coo clocks sold in Europe are actually made in the Black Forest.

Our drive over from Bavaria was really pretty good,  Miss Garmin only led us into one rock quarry and down one pedestrian only street.  We were stopped by the police.   But they were stopping everybody driving on the sidewalk and that is profiling, and profiling is ill legal.  We really weren't stopped but we like Ron White like all hillbillies on holiday.

Check back tomorrow for the Black Forest.

  2. Oh, I love these pictures of Bavaria! We stayed a week at Oberammergau and did a lot of hiking around there. We also visited NEUSCHWANSTEIN castle, but it was not a beautiful sunny day like you had. Oh, my, what a trip of a lifetime you are having! Soak it all up!!!! Thanks for sharing
