APRIL 21 TUSCANY

Today we drove from our Agritourismo to the Tuscan hill towns of San Gimignano and Volterra.  San Gimignano is a town with 14 towers.  In the 13th century the town had 72 towers.  The people of the town were feuding and they built the towers to protect themselves from their neighbors. Medieval San Gimignano was a pretty tough place to live.  The town is now a tourist trap and we went on to Volterra. Volterra was built by the Etruscans about 1300 B.C.. The town's most historic sight is the Etruscan Arch that was built about 1100 B.C.. During World War II, the Germans were going to blow up the Arch to slow the Allied advance.  The people of Volterra pulled up all the stones in the street and filled the Arch with the stones so the Germans would not destroy the Arch.  This was good enough for the Germans.   The Romans stole their idea for the Roman arch from the Etruscans.  The Arch is the only remaining Etruscan Arch.   The town also has a Roman theater.  Below you will find pictures of these sights and views from the road in Tuscany.

P.S.  Since we have been here in Europe, the weather has been beautiful.  Every day the temp. has been sunny, between 65 and 80 degrees, with no wind.
