The Travels of Nonette and Jerry Robinson: THE MILLE MIGLIA CAR RACE

The Mille Miglia is a 1000 mile race from Brescia Italy to Rome and back to Brescia. It is a race on public roads meaning you can drive it on your own if you would like. From 1927 to 1957 it was a high speed sports car race. In '57 a car left the road and killed several spectators and the driver. Since then the race has been a ralley. The 1000 miles is driven in 3 days in timed segments. They may give you 3 hours to go 150 miles, and your score is determined by how close you come to exactly 3 hours. All the cars must have been manufactured between 1927 and 1957. It a collection cars ranging from Fiat 500's worth a few thousand dollars to Ferrari and Mercedes Benz sports cars worth millions of dollars. If you like classic sports cars this is the greatest sports car show on the planet. I am a little obsessive but I took over 1000 pictures of these cars, but edited down to 90 or so for the blog. There were over 400 cars entered, with more than half of them over 70 years old. The winner of this 1000 mile race, in three days, was 78 years old. When you look at the cars below think about how comfortable they would be on ordinary two lane roads (no interstates) for 1000 miles. Some of the last pictures are a little blurry because I was losing the light after the sun started going down. When you lose the light you loose depth of field.
